Dyck Castle Foundation
Dyck Castle is one of the most culturally and historically significant moated castles in the Rhineland. With its outer castles and the farmyard, it extends over four islands in the Kelzenberg stream and is surrounded by a picturesque English landscape garden.
Beschreibung
Following careful restoration, the park around the moated castle has been restored to its original state and invites visitors to discover rare plants in a unique setting. It was laid out between 1820 and 1835 in the spirit of the Enlightenment as an early English landscape garden.
Exotic species from all over Europe were brought to Dyck and planted in suitable places. Garden architect Blaikie laid out woodland paths and shady avenues. They lead into the spacious park areas. Wide meadows, gently sculpted hills and water features provide soft contours. Today, the 53-hectare area is home to valuable trees and shrubs that are unparalleled in Europe in terms of age and species richness. Giant yew and sequoia, bald cypress and tulip tree, the Korean poplar or the antler tree present themselves as majestic apparitions. Sprawling rhododendrons provide a spectacular display of flowers in May. In June, the meadows bloom and are fragrant. A rich variety of colors can be found throughout the year in the orangery parterre. On the west side, the park merges into an old woodland. Magnificent old avenues adjoin and contribute to the special charm of the “Dycker Ländchen” in a sparsely wooded area.
