Day trip to the island
Kulturraum Hombroich
Just outside the city gates: the Museum Insel Hombroich, surrounded by greenery, is a world of its own. The museum in Neuss, just half an hour from Düsseldorf, comprises more than a dozen buildings scattered around a large landscaped park. The neighbouring Hombroich missile station, a former NATO base, is now a working and living space for artists and scientists.
The Langen Foundation's art and exhibition centre was opened in 2004, a building designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando - itself a work of art. Viktor and Marianne Langen's Japanese collection is unique in Europe in terms of its size and quality: around 350 representative works from the 12th to 20th centuries.
